Neural stem cell culture on laminin-521

Laminin expression in the hippocampus

The hippocampal basement membrane mainly contains alpha-5 laminins (laminin isoforms 521 and 511) and has been shown to protect neurons from apopotosis (Chen et al., Mol Biol Cell, 2003; Indyk et al., Neuroscience, 2003).

 

Biolaminin for hippocampal cell culture

A recent study showed that Biolaminin 511 promoted elongation of both axons and dendrites of hippocampal neurons in vitro (Fusaoka-Nishioka etal., Neurosci Res., 2011). Laminin isoform 521 only recently became available and hippocampal cells have since then been grown successfully on Biolaminin 521 (unpublished results). As both laminin 521 and 511 are expressed in most adult stem cell niches they likely also support neural progenitors in the dentate gyrus.
